X02 changelog
Every release, newest first.
v2.22.1 — Deleting a File No Longer Opens the Full-Screen Preview
OCTOBER 1, 2026
- fix: Delete Confirmation No Longer Opens the Preview: On the dashboard's grid view, confirming a delete — or pressing Cancel, or clicking outside the box — also opened the full-screen preview of the very file you were deleting. On phones the same happened when you tapped the three-dot menu or picked any action from it. The confirmation and the menu now do only what they say; clicking the image itself still opens the preview.
v2.22.0 — Choose What Connected Apps Can Do, and Manage Them From Your Dashboard
SEPTEMBER 30, 2026
- feature: Untick Permissions Before You Approve: Every permission an app asks for now has a checkbox on the consent screen. Untick what you would rather withhold and the button shows what you are granting — for example Allow 4 of 6. The app is told exactly which permissions it received, and anything else is refused on every call. This no longer depends on how the app builds its request.
- feature: Connected Apps in Your Dashboard: A new section under Account lists every app you have connected, with the address it sends you back to, when you connected it, and when it last made a request. Disconnect revokes its tokens immediately, and Edit permissions removes individual scopes from an app you want to keep — effective on its very next request, not when its token expires.
- improvement: Known Apps Are Recognised: The consent screen used to warn that X02 had not vetted any application, even Claude. When an app's sign-in returns to an address X02 recognises — starting with Claude — it is now marked Recognised and named by X02 rather than by itself. Recognition is by address, so an app that only calls itself Claude still gets the warning, and it says where the result is sent, not who started the request.
- improvement: Clearer Refusals for Empty Scopes: Asking for an empty scope used to fail with an unsupported-scope message that listed nothing. It now says the scope is empty and what to do instead.
- improvement: Tool Descriptions Made Consistent: Several MCP tool descriptions contradicted each other or the server — one said URL rehosting takes any file when it accepts images only, another referred to a Free plan when the API reports plans as basic or pro. Those now agree, with the free plan described as basic (free). Size and quota fields are declared as whole numbers, list_files reports whether each search hit is exact or fuzzy in its structured result, and move_files says why a file could not be moved.
- improvement: Rename and Share Are Marked Destructive: rename_files and share_folder can break links other people already hold, so they now advertise that to clients instead of presenting as harmless. Clients that ask before running destructive tools will ask for these too.
- fix: Upload Limit Display Matches the Limit: The dashboard said upload limits reset at midnight UTC, which was never true, and its used-and-remaining figures were a separate recount that could disagree with the limit that actually blocks an upload. The limit is a 24-hour window that opens with your first upload. The dashboard, and the get_account tool, now show that window's own count and when it resets.
- fix: View Counts Are Gone Everywhere They Were Still Mentioned: X02 no longer keeps view counts, but the How It Works page, the API reference, the replace-file guides, the MCP file tools (which returned a view count per file and could sort by it) and two admin screens still described them. Those references are removed.
- fix: No More Promise of Analytics: The home page, the site description and search-engine data, the FAQ, the sign-up page and the assistant-readable summary listed analytics as something an account unlocks. There is no per-account analytics screen — the dashboard shows your usage, storage and daily limits — so those mentions are gone, and the sign-up panel now calls that section Usage Stats.
- improvement: Retired the Switched-Off AI Docs Assistant: The floating X02 Helper chat had been off since its AI provider stopped working, but its API endpoints under /api/ai were still answering to any signed-in account. The assistant, those endpoints, its admin log viewer and the search database behind it are removed, so nothing serves the conversations it saved any more.
- improvement: Filter Files by Other: list_files can now filter for the other category — files whose type is none of image, video, audio, document or archive — matching the label results already carried.
v2.21.0 — MCP Hardening: Legacy Image Previews, Wider Client Support, and Registry Readiness
SEPTEMBER 22, 2026
- fix: Older Images Can Be Previewed Again: Files uploaded before mid-2026 were stored without a recorded file type, and the preview tool trusted that record — so it refused perfectly good images with the misleading message that they were not images at all. The file type is now determined by reading the file itself, so any image previews regardless of what the database remembers about it.
- fix: Preview Failures Say What Actually Went Wrong: A file that was deleted, a file that is genuinely not an image, and a file whose contents could not be retrieved all returned the same message. Each now explains its own case, so an assistant stops guessing and can tell you something true.
- improvement: File Handoff Works Beyond Claude: The tool that waits for you to drop a file held its request for 25 seconds, which some AI clients cut short and reported as a failure — so the automatic waiting only appeared to work in Claude. Each check is now short enough for every client, and assistants are told to keep checking rather than stopping at the first pause.
- improvement: Rate Limiting on the MCP Endpoint: The MCP endpoint authenticates with a token rather than an API key, so it was the one authenticated surface without a ceiling of its own. It now has a generous per-account limit that normal use will never reach.
- improvement: Ready for the MCP Registry: Added the server manifest and domain verification endpoint needed to list X02 in the official Model Context Protocol registry, so the connector can be discovered rather than pasted in by hand.
- improvement: Privacy Policy Covers Connected AI Apps: A new section explains what a connected application receives, what it never receives, what X02 stores about the connection, and how to revoke it.
v2.20.1 — Redesigned Authorization and Drop Screens, Plus a Setup Guide
SEPTEMBER 22, 2026
- improvement: Consistent Connection Screens: The authorization and file drop pages now share one layout built around the X02 wordmark, the familiar homepage dropzone, and the site's own colours and spacing. Both are pages an outside app sends you to, so they need to read as X02 at a glance rather than looking like an unfamiliar form.
- improvement: Clearer Authorization Copy: The redirect address is no longer labelled as verified, because X02 does not vet the applications that register. It now says plainly that anyone can register an app and choose its name, and that the address is the part worth checking.
- fix: A Failed Approval No Longer Loses the Request: If approving or denying an authorization hit a network error, the whole screen was replaced with a generic failure and the only way forward was to restart the connection from the app. The request now stays on screen with an explanation so it can simply be retried.
- fix: Declining a File Request Says So: Turning down a drop request showed a message about expired links and suggested asking for a new one. It now confirms that nothing was sent and that the assistant has been told.
- feature: New Setup Guide: A walkthrough for connecting X02 to Claude, Claude Code, ChatGPT, Cursor, Windsurf and VS Code, covering the plan requirements and cached tool lists that most often go wrong, with troubleshooting for each.
v2.20.0 — Hand Files to Your Assistant — Drop Links, a Standing Tray, and Image Preview
SEPTEMBER 21, 2026
- feature: Drop Links: Ask an assistant to upload a file and it now hands you a link to drop it into. Attachments in a chat could never reach X02 before — the protocol has no way to pass a file to a remote server, and encoding one into the conversation only works for tiny content. The file now travels through your own browser instead, going through the normal upload path so quota, scanning and folders all apply as usual.
- feature: Paste Straight In: The drop page takes Ctrl+V, so a screenshot already on your clipboard is one keystroke. Dragging and a file picker work too, and you can drop several files at once.
- feature: No Need to Say You're Done: The assistant waits for the upload rather than asking you to confirm. Drop the file and it carries on by itself.
- feature: A Standing Tray: Pin x02.me/drop as a tab and paste files into it whenever you like. Anything waiting there is collected the next time an assistant looks — so if you drop it before you ask, there is no link and no waiting at all.
- feature: Assistants Can See Your Images: A new view_file tool returns the picture itself rather than just its name, so an assistant can confirm which file it found instead of guessing from a generated filename. Images are downscaled for viewing; other file types return details only.
- improvement: Safer Requests: The drop page names the app asking and the host it connects back to, since anyone can register a connector and pick its own display name. Requested links expire after 15 minutes, each drop is delivered once, and folder API keys cannot be used to hand over files.
v2.19.1 — MCP Fixes: Honest Upload Limits and Explicable Search Results
SEPTEMBER 21, 2026
- fix: Site-Wide Page Errors Resolved: A refactor of the canonical-URL handling left three request handlers referencing a constant that had moved, so page loads returned a 500 error. Every page is serving normally again, and deploys now run an automated check against the live site afterwards — a build succeeding is not evidence that pages actually render, and this class of error only appears once a real request is made.
- fix: MCP Endpoints No Longer Redirected: The OAuth endpoints advertised in the MCP server's discovery metadata were being redirected to the apex domain by the canonical-host rule, so no client could complete a connection. All advertised endpoints now answer on up.x02.me, and a test derives the endpoint list from the metadata itself so a future addition cannot silently break the handshake again.
- fix: Search Results Now Explain Themselves: Assistants using list_files only saw the generated filename, not the original upload name that the search actually matched, so a search could return a file with no visible reason. Results now show the original name and label each hit as an exact or fuzzy match, with a note that file search is fuzzy by design.
- improvement: Realistic Inline Upload Guidance: The MCP upload tool advertised a 10MB limit for files sent directly through an assistant, which was misleading — the bytes are base64-encoded into the request, so an ordinary screenshot becomes roughly 200,000 characters and most assistants refuse to send it. The limit is now stated honestly, and the tool points to URL rehosting, the web uploader, or ShareX instead.
v2.19.0 — Connect AI Assistants to X02 — MCP Server with OAuth Sign-In
SEPTEMBER 21, 2026
- feature: MCP Server: X02 now speaks the Model Context Protocol at https://up.x02.me/mcp. Point Claude, Cursor, Windsurf, or any MCP client at that one URL and your assistant can upload, search, rename, move, delete, and organize files on your account by request.
- feature: Sign In Instead of Pasting a Key: Connecting a client opens a browser sign-in on x02.me rather than asking you to paste your API key into it. The app receives its own scoped token, and your API key never leaves X02.
- feature: Per-App Permissions You Approve: Every connection requests specific scopes — read files, upload, delete, manage folders — listed on the consent screen before you approve. Scopes are enforced on every call, so an app granted read-only access is refused if it later tries to delete something.
- feature: Twelve Tools Covering the Dashboard: Uploads (direct or rehosted from a URL), file search and metadata, rename, bulk move, delete, folder create/delete, shared album links, and an account view showing your remaining daily quota.
- feature: Revoke One App Without Breaking the Rest: Disconnecting a client kills its tokens immediately. Your API key, folder keys, and other connected apps are untouched — no rotation, no collateral damage.
- improvement: Terminal CLI Retired: The x02 CLI has been removed. Its login validated keys against an endpoint that did not exist, which meant it accepted any string as a valid key and then failed on every subsequent command. The MCP server replaces it for assistant-driven work; cURL and the REST API remain the path for your own scripts.
- improvement: Docs and Guides Updated: The API reference now documents the MCP server, its tools, and its scopes in place of the CLI section, and the upload, API key, ShareX, and folder guides have been rewritten to drop CLI commands in favor of working cURL and MCP equivalents.
- fix: Rate Limiting on Alternate Auth Headers: Requests authenticating with an Authorization: Bearer header or an apiKey query parameter — both accepted by the API — were being rate limited by IP instead of by key, so users behind a shared address competed for one bucket and per-account daily limits were skipped. All three authentication forms now resolve to the same per-key limit.
- fix: Accurate Upload Attribution: Uploads made through the MCP server are now recorded as such in analytics instead of being indistinguishable from direct API calls, and the real visitor IP is preserved in audit logs rather than the server's own address.
v2.18.0 — Custom Domain Is Back — Bring Your Own Domain, with Live DNS Verification
SEPTEMBER 9, 2026
- feature: Custom Domain Is Back (Pro): Serve every upload from a domain you own — e.g. img.yourbrand.com — instead of a x02.me link. Fully rebuilt from the ground up and available now for Pro accounts from the Custom Domain section of your dashboard.
- feature: Live Per-Record DNS Verification: Each required DNS record now shows a real Verified/Pending badge as it actually propagates, automatically re-checked every 20 seconds — no more guessing whether your DNS has taken effect or waiting on a slow manual recheck.
- feature: Managed SSL, Zero Setup: Once your DNS records verify, X02 automatically issues and manages a free SSL certificate for your domain — no certificates to upload or renew yourself.
- improvement: Redesigned Setup Flow: A new step-by-step wizard (Add Domain → Configure DNS → Active) with a single consolidated DNS records checklist replaces the old single-page wall of instructions.
- fix: Corrected DNS Setup Instructions: Fixed the documented DNS target that was pointing at a non-existent host, and existing links on the subdomain or short-URL format are completely unaffected — only new uploads use your custom domain once it's active.
- fix: Full Cache Coverage for Custom Domains: Deleting, renaming, or replacing a file now correctly purges the CDN cache for its custom-domain URL too, not just the x02.me and subdomain variants.
v2.17.2 — Rebuilt API Docs: Searchable Reference with Accurate Endpoint Examples
SEPTEMBER 8, 2026
- feature: Searchable Developer Docs: The API reference now has sidebar navigation and live search across endpoint paths, parameters, CLI commands, and FAQs, replacing the old flat scroll-through list.
- improvement: Syntax-Highlighted, Runnable Examples: Added method-colored endpoint cards with syntax-highlighted code samples and an inline request runner for trying calls directly from the docs page.
- fix: Corrected Endpoint Reference: Fixed several endpoint examples that no longer matched the real API responses, and added full documentation for the Custom Domain management endpoints.
v2.17.1 — Custom Domain Support Restored with Setup & Routing Fixes
SEPTEMBER 8, 2026
- feature: Custom Domain Support Restored: Reintroduced custom domain support for eligible accounts, allowing uploads and profile URLs to serve under a branded domain again after the temporary removal.
- fix: DNS & Route Validation Fixes: Resolved the underlying setup and routing issues that caused custom domain configs to fail, including invalid fallback handling, broken domain detection, and incorrect URL resolution during setup.
- improvement: Safer Migration & Recovery: Existing users' custom domain settings are now preserved and revalidated more carefully, with clearer validation/error messaging to prevent broken configurations from silently persisting.
- improvement: Unified URL Behavior: Standardized upload and direct-link generation across the main site, username subdomain, and custom domain flows so links behave consistently and CDN/cache propagation warnings are easier to understand.
v2.17.0 — Post-Upload Feedback Campaign with Optional Media Attachments
